Sevonna Brown’s work began under her grandmother’s kitchen table: small hands, big ears, and a heart wide open.
Playing behind her grandmother’s knees, she listened to the stories, secrets, and inner lives of the women who raised her: her aunts, her older sisters, the women who whispered about fibroids, heavy cycles, miscarriages, menopause, and the quiet suffering they were told to endure. She became a little researcher before she even had the language for it—studying their pain, their resilience, and the patterns that too often cost Black women their health and sometimes their lives.
That early calling shaped everything.
Today, Sevonna is a strategist, storyteller, and systems-builder whose mission is singular and deeply personal: to save the lives of women and families by transforming the conditions that harm them. She weaves together strategy, operations, and healing-informed leadership to create environments where truth, tension, and transformation can exist without rupture. With a trauma-aware, equity-centered lens, she names what others avoid, racialized and gendered power, structural neglect, and turns those truths into pathways for safety, accountability, and possibility.
Whether guiding organizations through complex change, designing programs that restore dignity and care, or building solutions that improve health experiences and outcomes, Sevonna moves with the precision of a strategist and the devotion of someone who remembers exactly where her story began: beneath a kitchen table, learning that women’s stories are blueprints for survival. Her work is rooted in that legacy, loving women and families enough to fight for systems that finally love them back.
Sevonna Brown was invited to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to speak at the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent Annual Session 2024.
In April 2024, Sevonna Brown, a distinguished advocate for racial justice and maternal health equity, delivered a powerful address at the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent Annual Session, held from April 16 to 19 at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland.

“Every day, I’m entrusted with the stories of women and their families. I carry those stories into hospital systems, academic spaces, and research teams to help shape healthcare strategies that lead to better outcomes and more dignified experiences.”

SEVONNA’S STORY
Sevonna Brown’s mission for health equity ignited at age 13, after two devastating losses in her family. She began chasing that calling long before she understood that her grandmother’s legacy in healthcare was already shaping her path. What emerged is a lifelong devotion to protecting the lives of women and families—a relentless, soul-deep commitment to change. From the streets of New York to villages across the globe, Sevonna’s hands-on advocacy has transformed thousands of lives. As a trained birth worker, maternal health advocate, and culture keeper, she has fought to dismantle medical racism and ensure Black women receive the care, dignity, and respect they deserve. Through initiatives like Merck for Mothers’ Safer Childbirth Cities and international maternal health convenings, she has shifted policy, strengthened communities, and delivered education, support, and hope where it’s needed most. During the pandemic, seeing deep gaps in holistic care, she founded Sanctuary for Integrative Medicine to offer healing-centered support to communities in crisis. Sevonna’s influence reaches institutions and future generations of caregivers. As a trusted trainer for colleges, universities, and organizations including CVS and Aetna, she is shaping doulas, midwives, health workers, and advocates grounded in equity and cultural humility. A Gates Millennium Scholar, NGen 2023 Fellow, and Principal Investigator for the NY-CHAMP Center of Excellence, Sevonna is igniting change with every life she touches—calling the world to build a future where all women not only survive, but truly thrive.
